Bao Varakhii Rattery always retains first pick of our litters, in an effort to better build our bloodlines, paying close attention to conformation, temperament and proper standards. Second pick of the litter goes to the breeders we trust and work with, who are also doing their best to improve the rat fancy as a whole. Our waiting list gets pick of all remaining babies.
People who are interested in adopting a baby from us MUST fill out our Adoption Application as fully as possible. We will review your application and then email you. If we email you that there was something in your application that needs clarification, you must email us back. If we have no problems with your application, we will email you to let you know you are approved. If you are not emailed within a week, we did not get your application and you should resend it.
Once you are approved and on the waiting list, please join our Yahoo group (blue-velvet) the link to which is at the bottom of the home page. New ritten announcements and changes to the breeding schedule will be posted here first.
Due to contagious viruses in the rat-keeping world, I can not allow people directly into the rattery to pick up their animals. We can meet elsewhere, or you can come to the house, but you will not be allowed into the room where the rats are kept. This is for the safety of the animals.
I do not ship. If you live more than 1.5 hours away from me, you will have to make arrangements to drive here and pick up your animal.
Our Planned Litter page will tell you what breedings we plan at what times. Please do not email us looking for types of rats we do not breed. We breed Siamese, Black Satin, Dove, Russian Blue and Russian Cinnamon rats, and try to stay focused on those types.
We adopt babies in same-sex pairs. Rats are $20 each, regardless of type, color, or show quality.
We do not sell breeding stock to anyone except for reputable, ethical ratteries that are well-established and that we know and trust. If you are a new breeder, we may be willing to mentor you, but you will not be sold rats on a breeding contract until we have established a relationship and we know and trust you. No offense is meant by this, but we've spent years working hard on selection and raising our animals and don't want that work to go to waste. 99% of BVR rats are sold on strict pet-only contracts.
Babies are only available to reserve they turn four weeks old. On the Babies page, the date which the babies may be reserved is listed. All interest should be emailed to us before midnight on that day. After midnight, we will take all the statements of interest and honor them in order of seniority on the waiting list. Those reservations will be posted by the morning of the next day.
After a successful statement of interest is placed in a particular ritten, the phrase "VOICE: Bob Smith" will be placed under their picture. That means that Bob Smith has a tentative reservation on that ritten. Bob now has 7 days to send me a half-down deposit on that particular baby (I will email Bob with my contact information when I Voice the baby for him.) The price of a BVR rat is $20, so the deposit is $10.00. When I get the deposit I will change the notation under the baby to "RESERVED: Bob Smith." If Bob doesn't get me his deposit or contact me with an explanation with 7 days, the baby goes back up for adoption. I have had problems in the past with people backing out of reservations, so this is necessary.
Babies are available for pickup the Saturday after they turn six weeks old. This date will be posted on the Available page. Arrangements can be made to meet with you, but we will only drive up to 1.5 hours in any direction to meet with you, so take this into consideration before you apply please!
At the time of sale, a legal Adoption Contract (Breedable or Pet-Only) must be signed. No one will be sold a rat who has not signed a contract!
The balance of the money owed for the animal is paid after the contract is signed. In addition to their new BVR baby, the adopter will receive a NARR Registration Certificate, a five-generation Pedigree, and information about the RFL.
We really love receiving updates, pictures and emails
about the health and happiness of our babies once they go to their new homes!
Please keep us in mind as your new babies go through their lives.
