All breedings are tentative plans. Should either of the parents prove unfit for breeding, either through temperament, health or pedigree issues, they will be removed from the breeding program and replaced. Breedings may not "take" - placing a male and female together and having them breed does not guarantee a successful pregnancy.
After the RFL 2008 Rat Show
| FSTR Cheerios (living at Farstar) | X | BVR Marzipan |
| For our Russian Cinnamon line... Marzipan is a completely awesome girl out of two of the most beautiful parents ever to grace this rattery, BVR Princess Chicken and BVR Pecan. Like both parents, she has a stunning head, gorgeous ears, and a sweet personality: she carries Mink, Russian Blue, and Satin. Cheerios is a big, robust guy from FSTR, whose slick Satin coat and smuchy personality make him a real winner! We'll see Mink Satins out of this litter, and possibly Russian Blue and Dove Satins as well, in Dumbo and Standard ears. | ||
| BVR-FSTR TumTum | X | BVR Gemini |
| For our Siamese line... This is going to be a truly awesome litter. TumTum's a big, stocky robust boy with an amazing pedigree and a great personality. Gemini is an awesome girl out of my Siamese line, with lovely dark points, a very nice head and a very sweet personality. This should give us an amazing array of Siamese, Black and possibly Russian Blue babies in Rex, standard and Satin coats! | ||
| BVR Filbert (living at Farstar) | X | BVR-FSTR Uffish Thought |
| For our Russian Cinnamon line... This is going to be a very nice litter. Filbert is a gorgeous boy whose head and coat always stop me short every time I visit the Farstar Rattery, out of one of my favorite bloodlines. Uffish Thought is a stunning Satin girl, possibly carrying both Mink and Russian Blue - either way, all the babies will carry both of those colors, and Satin as well! Standard and possibly Dumbo ears! | ||
| BVR-FSTR Callooh (living at Farstar) | X | BVR-FSTR Beware |
| For our Black Satin line... A second step on the road to pure Black Satins, this sibling breeding combines the best littermates of our first litter. Both Beware and Callooh are stunning rats, who show the best qualities of both of their parents. This is going to be a completely amazing litter! While there may be various colors and coat types in this litter, we'll be hanging onto the best Black Satins. | ||
A note on my breeding plans...
Some of these plans are my thoughts at the time. They are not concrete and laid in stone until the day I put the doe with the buck. 90% of my breedings are based on the doe. I believe that the doe is more than 50% of the quality of the baby, not only does she contribute half the genetics, but all of the upbringing and teaching.
I try to breed my does fairly late, from 8-13 months, to be sure they are what I want to breed, that they have developed well and stayed healthy. The next step is to find a buck who will compliment her strengths and try and correct her weaknesses. The doe is the most concrete of the plans you see above. Unless she suffers a serious decline in health or a snag in her pedigree, I'm fairly confident to be breeding her. The buck I'll be using, however, has a much higher chance of changing, depending on development, temperamental/hormonal changes, and the development of siblings in addition to health and pedigree.
A doe has a limited breeding life. A buck can breed until the day he dies. It's almost always possible to set a buck aside for later use; not so much the doe.
